Bible Study Tips

As we read and study the Bible, God transforms who we are and gives us the desire and ability to be more like Him.

So, where do you begin?

Here are some tips I use when studying God’s word. Hoping you find these tips helpful and you can apply to your study as well.

Create a Lifestyle

Have a Time

Set aside time daily with God — whether it’s first thing in the morning, at lunch, or in the evening — and faithfully keep it.

Have a Place

Having a designated place to study & pray helps us remove distractions and frees us to worship and pray out loud.

Have a Plan

Give 10 minutes of reading your Bible everyday as a starting point. As we study every day, it helps when we have a plan for connecting regularly with God.

Where to Start

The Bible can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. I recommend starting in one of the Gospels: Book of Matthew, Book of Mark, Book of Luke & Book of John.

Pick one & start there!

Begin with Prayer

Ask the Holy Spirit to be your teacher & help you understand what you’re reading.

Read with Intention

Don’t just read to read and check it off your to do list. Before you begin, have INTENTION. Go into studying with the expectation that you will learn something, and come out of it with great information that will help change your life.

Look up the Background of the Book

You want to know who wrote the Book, when they wrote the Book, who they were writing the Book to, & the purpose of the Book. This gives you greater insight and purpose of what you’re reading.

Use a Bible translation that you can understand

Comparing Bible versions can give you better clarity of what the Book or scripture is trying to say and compare the wording.

I personally like the NIV, NLT, and Amplified Bible version because it simplifies it better. However, the key is using something that works for you.

Apply it to Your Life

The Bible doesn’t do any good if you read it, study it & take notes without applying it to your life.

So after taken notes, compared versions to get a good idea of what the word is saying, then ask God how to use it to change your life. The Holy Spirit lives in you & He will guide you in this step.
